Instituto Ana Maria Casillas-Tepatitlan, Mexico (2016)

Our first trip to Tepatitlan in support of Instituto Ana Maria Casillas. Not just a school but also home to an ever changing number of child residents. The school takes in children ranging from infants to teens. Also, accepting adults with developmental deficits. The children from the surrounding areas may become residents due to a variety of circumstances. Ranging from temporary boarding for students that do not live in the city, separation from guardians or no longer have a responsible guardian.

Children do at times return home to their families on a regular basis if they live their through the week only to attend class. Others may not be reunited with their families until determined by the school or state/local law. There are also children that are adopted from the program. This creates a lot of uncertainty for the students and staff.

The children here are exceptional in that you always see them supporting one another. The older students help with the toddlers and infants when not in class. Adopting a big brother/sister role and caring for their peers. There is a sense of family among the students that live at the school. Relying upon one another for support and encouragement.

The staff is a dedicated group of Sisters from the local church, teachers and volunteers from the community. Despite several financial limitations the program provides essential care to the children living at the school. We collaborate with the program director and teachers to improve basic needs for the children, school and living areas.

During this trip we were able to provide unpoppable balls to support all of the physical education classes and for the children living at the school. Personal hygiene items were provided to every child resident with supplies for future students. Art and classroom supplies are provided for every visit and this was no exception. The staff and students were happy to receive all of the items for PLAY and creating. Helping to support the 20 plus students living at the school.
